Raman Amplifiers for Telecommunications 1
There has been a revived interest in Raman amplification due to the availability of high pump powers and improvements in small core size fibers. Two general categories of Raman amplifiers exist: distributed and discrete, also known as DRAs. They improve the noise figure and reduce the nonlinear penalty of the amplifier, allowing for longer amplifiers spans, higher bit rates, closer channel spacings, and operation near the zero dispersion wavelength. DRAs are already becoming commonplace in most ...

Childhood Epilepsy: Language, Learning and Behavioural Complications
William Svoboda channels a lifetime of clinical experience into three areas–language, learning, and behavior–that encompass the major difficulties of children “growing up with epilepsy.” In each area he looks at why the problems arise and assesses potential treatments. The focus of this comprehensive work is on the complete care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. More than half of all epileptic children have interrelated language, learning, and/or behavior complications that persist beyond seizure control and present problems for health and educational systems. This reference makes a significant contribution to furthering the knowledge of clinicians, educators, and language specialists about the needs of this special pediatric population.

The Central Nervous System: Structure and Function
A major goal of this well-established textbook is to provide knowledge and understanding of neuroscience as a basis for clinical thinking. The strong emphasis on linking basic sciences with their clinical application has implications for the choices of which topics to treat in depth and which to treat more summarily - making this different from most other neuroscience textbooks. For example, topics of great practical importance like the cranial nerves, the autonomic nervous system, and pain are treated in depth. The book provides clear descriptions of brain structures and relates them to their functional properties by incorporating data ranging from molecular biology to clinical neurology and psychiatry. The focus is on fostering understanding of how the brain works rather than on the memorization of many details. Critical thinking is encouraged by providing information about the scientific basis for many “facts,” and pointing out where the evidence is insufficient to reach final conclusions. The many two-color illustrations - based on the author’s long experience in teaching medical students - make it easy to grasp complex structural and functional relationships. The third edition goes further than the previous ones in integrating material from all fields of the neurosciences. Two new chapters have been included on the vestibular system and control of eye movements, and all other chapters have been thoroughly revised. Although new material has been added, the total length of the text is virtually unchanged due to careful re-writing and elimination of less important material. There are many completely new figures and numerous others have been redrawn to enhance clarity.

Muscular Dystrophy: theFacts
The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic diseases that severely affect children and adults. For sufferers and their family, the illness presents enormous physical and psychological challenges. Written specifically for people with muscular dystrophy and their families, this new edition of Muscular dystrophy: the facts answers many of the questions asked about how and why it occurs, and how it will affect the life of a recently diagnosed child. Throughout, the different types of muscular dystrophy are described with a minimum of technical jargon. Questions relating to exercise, physiotherapy, surgery, and the emotional effects of the diseases are answered, and advice given on the problems of schooling and choice of career. Since publication of the 1st edition, the genes for almost all the different types of dystrophy have been identified, enabling prevention through genetic counselling, and relieving some of the worry for affected families. Drawn from his many years of experience treating patients, Professor Emery provides authoritative, yet compassionate advice for people living with this illness. From reviews of 1st edition ‘A family visiting a genetic counsellor readied with information from this book would be well versed in the scope of concerns that can arise as families live with MD. I applaud the effort to make this care package of information available to families.’ The American Journal of Human Genetics

The Parallel Brain: The Cognitive Neuroscience of the Corpus Callosum (Issues in Clinical and Cognitive Neuropsychology)
Hemispheric specialization is involved in every aspect of sensory, cognitive, and motor systems integration. Study of the corpus callosum, the bands of tissue uniting the brain’s two hemispheres, is central to understanding neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and behavior. It also brings the tools of hemispheric specialization to a fundamental problem of cognitive neuroscience: modularity and intermodular communication.
This book summarizes current research on the human corpus callosum. It also provides a comprehensive introduction to cognitive neuroscience. Rather than viewing the field through the various systems of the mind/brain such as perception, action, emotion, memory, language, and problem solving, it takes a case studies approach. Focusing on the central problem of simple reaction time, it examines the most basic possible sequence of perception-decision-action. The task is to press a button with one hand as soon as a patch of light is detected in the peripheral visual field. When the patch appears in the visual field opposite the responding hand, there must be interhemispheric transfer prior to response. But transfer of what–a visual input code? A cognitive decision code? A motor response code? Combining animal models, normal human studies, and clinical evidence, the authors apply anatomical, physiological, and behavioral perspectives to this question. The emerging view is that the corpus callosum consists of many parallel interhemispheric channels for communication and control, and that every transfer channel is context-dependent and modulated by attention.

Dementia: Mind, Meaning, and the Person (International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry)
Dementia is an illness that raises important questions about our own attitudes to illness and aging. It also raises very important issues beyond the bounds of dementia to do with how we think of ourselves as people - fundamental questions about personal identity. Is the person with dementia the same person he or she was before? Is the individual with dementia a person at all? In a striking way, dementia seems to threaten the very existence of the self. This book brings together philosophers and practitioners to explore the conceptual issues that arise in connection with this increasingly common illness. Drawing on a variety of philosophers such as Descartes, Locke, Hume, Wittgenstein, the authors explore the nature of personal identity in dementia. They also show how the lives and selfhood of people with dementia can be enhanced by attention to their psychosocial and spiritual environment. Throughout, the book conveys a strong ethical message, arguing in favour of treating people with dementia with all the dignity they deserve as human beings. The book covers a range of topics, stretching from talk of basic biology to talk of a spiritual understanding of people with dementia. Accessibly written by leading figures in psychiatry and philosophy, the book presents a unique and long overdue examination of an illness that features in so many of our lives.

Sure to be labeled immoral by some organized-religion enthusiast, balderdash by some ultrarational pragmatist, Schumaker’s book makes a case for the essential sameness of religion, hypnosis, and psychopathology. Cogently reasoned, laboriously constructed, its arguments are obviously not for everyone, but they will inspire and animate adherents and opponents alike. Are these three areas of human behavior merely different manifestations of the desire, conscious or unconscious, to bend reality and the perception of it to personal ends? Schumaker deals with reality, sanity, culture, dissociation and suggestion, and the roles and interactions of society and the individual, reducing each to its essence and examining and evaluating it individually and in concert with the others. Citing noted researchers and observers, he demonstrates how humans generally are inclined to construct “insane” realities that distance them from objective but possibly undesirable reality. Furthermore, Schumaker’s views and findings on the roles of ritual and perception in our lives and in our views of reality are fascinating. Mike Tribby

Is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) an illness that arises after horrific and life-threatening events? Or is it a label that medicalizes human suffering, and brings with it more problems than it solves?
Still a relatively new diagnosis, PTSD has changed our vocabulary and shaped our views on human coping and resilience. Yet almost every assumption upon which the diagnosis rests has come under question. In this volume, Gerald Rosen brings together leading international scholars in posttraumatic studies to consider the most contentious debates. Each chapter offers an analysis of the issues, reviews current research, and clarifies implications for the practicing clinician.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Issues and Controversies is essential reading for all practitioners, researchers, and students who work in the field of trauma. Professionals in related health fields and the law will also find this book useful.

Brain Repair (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology)
Brain Repair, addresses all relevant issues underlying the mechanisms of brain damage, brain plasticity and post-traumatic reorganisation after CNS lesions. This book is divided the three major sections that follow; cellular and molecular basis of brain repair, plasticity and reorganisation of neural networks, and experimental therapy strategies.
Brain Repair is written by high profile, international experts who describe in detail the newest results from basic research and highlight new model systems, techniques and therapy approaches. Based on a careful analysis of the cellular and molecular reaction patterns of the CNS to lesions, the contributions cover possibilities for endogenous reorganisation and repair as well as exciting new therapies emerging from basic research, some of which have already been introduced into the clinics. Thus, this book is unique in bridging the gap between basic and clinical research. It will be a valuable tool for all students, researchers and clinicians interested in understanding the brain’s capacity to cope with lesions and interested in learning about emerging new therapy concepts.

Mind, Meaning, and Mental Disorder: The Nature of Causal Explanation in Psychology and Psychiatry (International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychi
Philosophical ideas about the mind, brain, and behaviour can seem theoretical and unimportant when placed alongside the urgent questions of mental distress and disorder. However, there is a need to give direction to attempts to answer these questions. On the one hand a substantial research effort is going into the investigation of brain processes and the development of drug treatments for psychiatric disorders, and on the other, a wide range of psychotherapies is becoming available to adults and children with mental health problems. These two strands reflect traditional distinctions between mind and body, and causal as opposed to meaningful explanations of behaviour. In this book, which has been written for psychiatrists, psychologists, philosophers, and others in related fields, the authors propose a radical re-interpretation of these traditional distinctions. Throughout the discussions philosophical theories are brought to bear on the particular questions of the explanation of behaviours, the nature of mental causation, and eventually the origins of major disorders including depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and personality disorder. First published in 1996, this volume played an important role in bridging the gap between philosophy and psychiatry, and introducing those in psychiatry to philosophical ideas somewhat neglected in their field. Completely updated, the new edition of this acclaimed volume draws on the strengths of the first edition, and will be a central text in the burgeoning field of philosophy of psychiatry.

Magnetic Resonance of Myelination and Myelin Disorders
This third edition of Magnetic Resonance of Myelination and Myelin Disorders is considered the worldwide standard text in the field of white matter disorders. No other book covers the field so thoroughly. The 109 chapters extensively detail the myelin disorders known today, from clinical and laboratory data to pathology, chemical pathology, pathogenetic considerations, and therapy as well as magnetic resonance findings. Each new edition has doubled in size to accommodate the immense progress made in the technical features of magnetic resonance as well as the new knowledge in genetic defects, biochemical abnormalities, and cellular processes underlying myelin disorders. Most chapters in this new, updated edition have been entirely rewritten. Forty chapters have been added to include many new disorders now recognized as myelin disorders and to provide broader coverage of both hereditary and acquired myelin disorders in the adult population. A vast collection of nearly 4,000 images fully illustrating the subject matter has been gathered for this new edition. Not only are the typical MRI patterns of the diseases described, but, with recently available genetic confirmation, MRI phenotypic variation is also elucidated, best illustrated in the chapters on Alexander disease. The chapter on congenital muscular dystrophies clearly exemplifies the improved insight into disease classification based on the growing knowledge of related genes and how this is reflected in MRI patterns. This book is a valuable source of information for neurologists, pediatric neurologists, neuroradiologists, pediatricians, and geneticists. It belongs in the library of every radiology and neurology department.

Imaging of Carotid Artery Stenosis
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and carotid atherosclerosis is the leading cause of embolic stroke. In recent years, the need for a more detailed analysis of atherosclerotic plaques has been stressed. Information beyond the degree of narrowing of the vessel lumen seems to be desirable and there is considerable demand for diagnostic procedures that specifically identify rupture-prone, vulnerable plaques as the most frequent cause of sudden ischemic events.
This atlas is an up-to-date reference work on imaging in carotid artery stenosis written by internationally renewed experts. The authors take the reader step by step through illustrated descriptions of state-of-the-art imaging techniques that they have helped to develop, and demonstrate that these techniques are crucial in the management of patients. This book covers all facets of imaging in carotid artery stenosis and gives an outlook to future aspects. The “take-home-messages” at the end of each chapter are a quick help in daily practice.

Prototype and Scriptaculous in Action (Paperback)
Prototype and Scriptaculous are libraries that extend standard Ajax.
They make it easier to program Ajax and provide powerful features like
drag and drop and animation. In this book, developers learn by playing
and see how the libraries work in the real world. As experience with
Ajax increases, developers want the standard Ajax capabilities they
repeatedly use to be preprogrammed for them--and that's exactly what
Ajax libraries do for them. They reduce the pain of handling
cross-browser inconsistencies, they add useful language features, and
provide sophisticated functionality. Of these, Prototype is the most
popular JavaScript and Ajax framework for low-level user interface
features such as animation, drag and drop, and pre-built widgets.
Together, they free the developer up to concentrate on building the
application. They make a rich user experience easy to achieve. This book

Effective Prototyping for Software Makers (Interactive Technologies)
Much as we hate to admit it, most prototyping practice lacks a sophisticated understanding of the broad concepts of prototypingand its strategic position within the development process. Often we overwhelm with a high fidelity prototype that designs us into a corner. Or, we can underwhelm with a prototype with too much ambiguity and flexibility to be of much use in the software development process.
This book will help software makersdevelopers, designers, and architectsbuild effective prototypes every time: prototypes that convey enough information about the product at the appropriate time and thus set expectations appropriately.
This practical, informative book will help anyonewhether or not one has artistic talent, access to special tools, or programming abilityto use good prototyping style, methods, and tools to build prototypes and manage for effective prototyping.

Mathematics for Electrical Engineering and Computing by Mary Attenborough
Book Description
Mathematics for Electrical Engineering and Computing embraces many applications of modern mathematics, such as Boolean Algebra and Sets and Functions, and also teaches both discrete and continuous systems - particularly vital for Digital Signal Processing (DSP). In addition, as most modern engineers are required to study software, material suitable for Software Engineering - set theory, predicate and prepositional calculus, language and graph theory - is fully integrated into the book.
Excessive technical detail and language are avoided, recognising that the real requirement for practising engineers is the need to understand the applications of mathematics in everyday engineering contexts. Emphasis is given to an appreciation of the fundamental concepts behind the mathematics, for problem solving and undertaking critical analysis of results, whether using a calculator or a computer.
The text is backed up by numerous exercises and worked examples throughout, firmly rooted in engineering practice, ensuring that all mathematical theory introduced is directly relevant to real-world engineering. The book includes introductions to advanced topics such as Fourier analysis, vector calculus and random processes, also making this a suitable introductory text for second year undergraduates of electrical, electronic and computer engineering, undertaking engineering mathematics courses.
The book is supported with a number of free online resources. On the companion website readers will find:
* over 60 pages of "Background Mathematics" reinforcing introductory material for revision purposes in advance of your first year course
* plotXpose software (for equation solving, and drawing graphs of simple functions, their derivatives, integrals and Fourier transforms)
* problems and projects (linking directly to the software)
In addition, for lecturers only, http://textbooks.elsevier.com features a complete worked solutions manual for the exercises in the book.
Dr Attenborough is a former Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering at South Bank University. She is currently Technical Director of The Webbery - Internet development company, Co. Donegal, Ireland.
* Fundamental principles of mathematics introduced and applied in engineering practice, reinforced through over 300 examples directly relevant to real-world engineering
* Over 60 pages of basic revision material available to download in advance of embarking on a first year course
* Free website support, featuring complete solutions manual, background mathematics, plotXpose software, and further problems and projects enabling students to build on the concepts introduced, and put the theory into practice

Sixteen Simple Mathematical Formulae from the Vedas by Sri Bharati Krisna Tirthaji (Author), V. S. Agarwala (Editor)
Customer reviews
It is really amazing book of mathematics. I never knew that mathematics is so simple. Even it gave me explaination about current mathematic principles. After reading this book, I am able to solve equations very easily. This should be teach in every school. It is very easy and very interesting. I am shocked to realize that I did not knew about this book.
This is absolutely the best way to do any kind of calculations. It helped me out through my Graduate Studies (MBA) where I amazed my Finance and Accounting Proffessors with my ability to magically solve problems in my head and surprisingly come up with right answers faster than someone using a calculator

Hack the Stack
Remember the first time someone told you about the OSI model and described the various layers? It's probably something you never forgot. This book takes that same layered approach but applies it to network security in a new and refreshing way. It guides readers step-by-step through the stack starting with physical security and working its way up through each of the seven OSI layers. Each chapter focuses on one layer of the stack along with the attacks, vulnerabilities, and exploits that can be found at that layer. The book even includes a chapter on the mythical eighth layer. It's called the people layer. It's included because security is not just about technology it also requires interaction with people, policy and office politics. This book is designed to offer readers a deeper understanding of many common vulnerabilities and the ways in which attacker's exploit, manipulate, misuse, and abuse protocols and applications. The authors guide the readers through this process by using tools such as Ethereal (sniffer) and Snort (IDS). The sniffer is used to help readers understand how the protocols should work and what the various attacks are doing to break them. IDS is used to demonstrate the format of specific signatures and provide the reader with the skills needed to recognize and detect attacks when they occur. What makes this book unique is that it presents the material in a layer by layer approach which offers the readers a way to learn about exploits in a manner similar to which they most likely originally learned networking. This methodology makes this book a useful tool to not only security professionals but also for networking professionals, application programmers, and others. All of the primary protocols such as IP, ICMP, TCP are discussed but each from a security perspective. The authors convey the mindset of the attacker by examining how seemingly small flaws are often the catalyst of potential threats. The book considers the general kinds of things that may be monitored that would have alerted users of an attack.

HACKERS : HEROES OF THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION
Steven Levy's classic book explains why the misuse of the word "hackers" to describe computer criminals does a terrible disservice to many important shapers of the digital revolution. Levy follows members of an MIT model railroad club--a group of brilliant budding electrical engineers and computer innovators--from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s. These eccentric characters used the term "hack" to describe a clever way of improving the electronic system that ran their massive railroad. And as they started designing clever ways to improve computer systems, "hack" moved over with them. These maverick characters were often fanatics who did not always restrict themselves to the letter of the law and who devoted themselves to what became known as "The Hacker Ethic." The book traces the history of hackers, from finagling access to clunky computer-card-punching machines to uncovering the inner secrets of what would become the Internet. This story of brilliant, eccentric, flawed, and often funny people devoted to their dream of a better world will appeal to a wide audience.

Podcasting Hacks
Podcasting does for Internet audio listeners what TiVo does for television viewers--it puts you in charge of when you enjoy a program. Podcasting is a web-based broadcast medium that sends audio content (most commonly in the MP3 format) directly to an iPod or other digital audio player. You subscribe to audio feeds, receive new files automatically, and listen to them at your convenience. As you can imagine, podcasting is taking the "blogsphere" by storm. A podcast is a professional-quality Internet radio broadcast, and like blogging and HTML before it, this revolutionary new way of publishing to the Internet has become the new outlet for personal expression.

Auto Repair For Dummies
Most of us don’t know the first thing about the machines we’re licensed to drive – and this can turn a ticket to freedom into a ticket to trouble. If you’re like most people, you probably tend to drive around until something goes wrong with the car. You then incur the expense of replacing worn and burnt-out parts (or the entire engine) when low-cost, regular maintenance could have kept your wheels turning for a long time.Auto Repair For Dummies is indispensable for anyone who is tired of nodding and smiling at the incomprehensible mutterings of your mechanic, only to end up shelling out money for repairs that you neither fully understand nor always need. This easy-to-understand guide is also for you if you* Don't have the vaguest idea of how a car works.* Can't identify anything you see under the hood of your vehicle.* Are tired of other people assuming (especially if you’re a teenager or a woman) that you aren’t capable of handling repairs yourself.* Don't want to feel helpless in an emergency.* Are tired of being ripped off because of your own ignorance.
